How does tang sight work
The option of what prescription glasses to use is omitted from this discussion as your optometrist is the person to discuss that with. There are, however, simple strategies that one can integrate into their match shooting that will allow them to improve their scores through an improved sight picture. If the rear aperture and target are "fuzzy" that is fine, just put the fuzz-ball in the middle of the front sight. The more light you can get into your eye the better your focus.
So, what that says is that the more light you can get into your eyes the better they will be able to focus on the front sight and target. With that in mind, tinted glasses are, in general, not a good thing for middle-age and old-age presbyopia types. Clear safety glasses are the way to go and clear glasses with high quality glass lenses are even better: the more the light transmission through the lens the better. You can see the difference between polycarbonate lenses and high quality glass lenses, the glass safety lenses offering better target definition.
The only time and only lens color that we should use is optic yellow when contrast is an issue. This typically is a good strategy in silhouette target shooting when the contrast between the darkness of the berm and dark animal is low.
Optic yellow will increase the contrast without removing too much light from our eyeballs. Remember all tinted glasses remove light from our eyes and that is NOT a good thing.
For "tired, old eyes" a front "lollypop" type aperture ring on a post is the way to go. It is too difficult to focus on a front post, cross hairs or pinhead and still be able to see the target reasonably well. Your eyeglasses prescription would need to be "over corrected" to see the front post or pinhead properly with the unintended consequence of reduced target focus and the resulting degraded target definition.
Most of us should be using a 0. The best way for us to improve our focus on the front sight is to "stop down" reduce the rear aperture. This will allow our eyes to naturally focus on the front sight better. One should experiment with what works the best concerning front sight aperture diameter. Post by crs » Wed Dec 26, pm. Are they better for this problem. Also how are tang sights when it comes to low light conditions compared to regular iron sights? The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.
Post by Chuck yd » Tue Dec 25, pm They work just great for guys like you and me who cant dial in that rear sight like we used to. Just look through the hole, forget it is there, and put the front sight on target and fire. All of my open sighted rifles wear some sort of peep, either tang or receiver mounted with the exception of my traditional muzzleloading long guns and the rear sights on those are mounted " from the eye.
I have seen old ML rifles with dovetails in the barrel where the owner kept mooving the rear sight forward to be able to see it. The rear sight on many rifles ran be reversed.
Tap it out and install it backwards leaf forward to gain distance from the eye. This works for a while for some people. IMO you don't get any benefits with them in our game I have to disagree with most of the responses you have gotten so far. I started with a used Marlin that came with a tang sight. I have had success with it, but I wanted a ' The new one came without a tang sight and I was not impressed. With a tang sight you have to line up the front sight and the target.
As Rance said, if you can see the front sight and the target, its good enough to score. I just put a tang sight on my new rifle and am happy. As always, YMMV. I disagree with folks who think a tang sight is slower. I think it is faster than a standard buckhorn sight and greatly improves target acquisition.
I've used one on my deluxe rifle with a inch barrel for years. I use a tang sight. I tried shooting SASS with the barrel sight but personally prefer the tang sight with the sight aperture removed to just give a ghost ring. For big, close targets I fold the tang sight down and just use the front sight. You don't need a rear sight for those kind of targets. You are not talking fast.
Or you would not be using a Tang and a 30 inch rifle. I have been using one on most all of my rifles for 11 years as a ghost ring. Works real good for the long range bonus shot.
Have won a few buckles and wood with one. Just seems to work better with my eye. May not for yours. I have drilled 3 of my rifles for the front screw of the tang on my drill press. It is not the most fun thing to do. Takes awhile to jig it up since nothing is level. By using this site, you agree to our Terms of Use.

Cheers, FJT. Anvil Al Posted September 2, I've had the Marbles rear Tang sight on both my '66 Yellowboys fer probably years.. I run them without the arpetures in them and just use it as a ghost ring for sighting.. Upside: They will give you a very quick response time to be on target and be quick for next target aquistion without the arpeture..
